Together with our community, we work to create solutions to prevent domestic and

sexual violence.

In February 2019, Community Beyond Violence, a non-profit organization in Nevada County that supports survivors of domestic and sexual violence, was awarded a multi-year prevention grant from the California Department of Public Health. The funding gave the agency the opportunity to implement the Close to Home approach in Western Nevada County. Core groups of volunteer youth and adults were formed to begin assessing the needs and opportunities in our area. The groups came together to collaborate on a community survey and the Nevada County Community Action Team was born.

At the heart of our work is the understanding that violence is rooted in the intersections of multiple forms of inequality and oppression. Our focus is domestic and sexual violence prevention, but we know that preventing these forms of violence is not possible without also considering how other issues such as racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and gender equity impact our community. We also know that many forms of violence share the same risk factors and protective factors. Therefore, decreasing any risk factors or increasing any protective factors prevents multiple forms of violence.

With this in mind, our goal is to engage our entire community in designing solutions and leading social change. We recognize that everyone has wisdom to share and violence prevention is everyone's responsibility. We can change social norms and inspire a more respectful and connected community by working together as individuals and as community partners, by building powerful relationships, and by taking creative action. We assess community needs. We talk about community issues and events. We build strength-based solutions that increase community connection. We act to prevent violence in our community.

We are always growing our network! There are a number of ways to get involved depending on what you are passionate about and the amount of time you have to participate.
